This austere mid-19th century Chinese cabinet from Shanxi, China has grand proportions. The subtle wood grain in its two doors adds vibrancy and understated elegance to a cabinet of such an impressive scale. The doors were designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the frame, freeing the cabinet of the need for distracting surface-mounted hinges. Masterful mortise and tenon construction joins the cabinet together, without nails or screws.
