Victorian Burl Walnut Three-Tier Whatnot with Tooled Leather Top, Circa 1840 – Antique Furniture with Brass Casters
This stunning Victorian three-tier whatnot, dating back to circa 1840, is a fine example of English antique craftsmanship and design. Made from exquisite burr walnut, this piece features an original, faded red tooled leather top framed with moulded surrounds and crowned with turned finials. Each figured shelf is supported by barley twist columns, while the intricately fretted sides add an extra touch of elegance. The display shelf or display stand is raised on turned feet with solid brass casters by the well-regarded maker Cope and Collinson, combining beauty with functionality.
Burr walnut, also known as burl walnut in the US, is highly sought after for its unique, swirling grain patterns and "eye" formations, which result from natural growths on the tree. This exceptional grain pattern makes each piece one-of-a-kind, and the rich tones and intricate wood patterns make this whatnot a true collector’s piece.
