Mid-century Swedish rya rug, 1950s.
This compact rya is defined by a clear and contrasting interplay of red and green tones, arranged in a simple, graphic composition. The pattern reads with immediacy, yet retains a softened edge through the depth of the pile, where colour transitions are subtly diffused.
The relatively small scale emphasizes the composition, allowing it to function almost as a textile panel rather than a conventional floor covering. Variations in pile height and density create a gentle surface movement, giving the rug a tactile presence despite its restrained format.
Measuring 126 × 72 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm, the rug is particularly suited to more deliberate placements — beside a chair, in a narrow space, or as part of a layered interior arrangement.
As was common in Scandinavian interiors, rya textiles of this type may also be presented as wall-mounted pieces, where the composition becomes more direct and the material qualities more pronounced.
The reverse reveals the hand-knotted construction. The rug remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and use.
A concise and graphic example of Swedish mid-century rya design, where colour contrast and proportion define the expression.
