Bali rya rug designed by Birgitta Salenius and produced by NIAB, Sweden, 1950s.
Hand-knotted in wool, the rug is defined by a dense, richly structured pile characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian rya production. The surface is composed through a restrained interplay of earthy and muted tones — brown, cream, lavender and subtle multicoloured nuances — creating a quietly shifting field of colour.
Variations in pile height and tone lend the surface a pronounced depth and a distinctly tactile presence, allowing the material to respond subtly to changes in light and viewpoint. Areas of denser and more open structure articulate the composition without reliance on overt pattern.
Measuring 205 × 117 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm, the rug possesses balanced proportions and a clear architectural format.
The construction reflects traditional craftsmanship, with the underside revealing the hand-worked structure. The piece remains in very good vintage condition, showing only minor, even wear consistent with age.
A characteristic example of Swedish mid-century rya design, where colour, structure and material are integrated into a cohesive and highly tactile composition. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
