Mid-century Swedish rya rug, 1950s.
This smaller-format rya is distinguished by a tightly controlled palette of blue and blue-green tones, arranged in a geometric composition that reads as a softened grid or diamond structure. The pattern is not sharply outlined but emerges through shifts in density and tone, giving the surface a quiet rhythm rather than a decorative statement.
The pile is relatively even yet lively, with subtle variations that create a faint shimmer as light moves across the surface. This lends the rug a sense of depth without relying on strong contrast or overt patterning.
Its scale — 130 × 89 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm — makes it particularly suited to more deliberate placements: beside a chair, within a smaller interior, or as part of a layered textile arrangement.
As was common in Scandinavian interiors of the period, rya rugs of this type may also be presented as wall-mounted textiles, where the composition can be read more directly and the material qualities become more pronounced.
The construction is visible on the reverse, revealing the hand-knotted structure. The rug remains in very good vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age.
A composed and quietly graphic example of Swedish rya production, defined by balance, material clarity and a restrained geometric language.
