The Captain’s Shore Leave.
Imagine that it's late afternoon in Brewster, 1812. The fog is rolling in off the Atlantic, smelling of salt spray and secrets. Inside the captain’s house—a sturdy Federal manse built to withstand gales—there is firelight and the sharp, restorative scent of dark-roast coffee.
The Captain doesn't reach for a mug. He reached for these.
He brought them back from London before the Embargo, tucked safely in a cedar chest. Copeland Spode, circa 1810. The "Green Fitzhugh" pattern. It’s a design that feels like a conversation between East and West: stylized butterflies, peonies, and Greek keys rendered in a green so deep it rivals the pine forests of the Outer Cape.
The Particulars:
These aren't your standard, utilitarian vessels. They are demitasse—small, potent, and unapologetically civilized.
The Pedigree: Authentic Spode’s "Green Fitzhugh," produced during the height of the Regency era.
The Origin: Recovered from a venerable Cape Cod estate, where they sat undisturbed for generations.
The Craft: Fine porcelain that feels surprisingly substantial in the hand, with the distinctive underglaze transfer that made Spode the toast of Staffordshire.
The Set: Four cups and four matching saucers. All in remarkable condition, considering they’ve survived two centuries.
There is something about holding a piece of 1810. It grounds you. It reminds you that while the world might be rushing toward the next digital whim, some things—like a well-fired glaze and a perfectly balanced saucer—are timeless.
Perfect for a post-dinner espresso, or simply for sitting on the sideboard looking like they know something you don’t.
