The original piece is believed to be a Roman steelyard weight made in the image of a man, possibly Sextus Pompey (that is the reason for the loop on the top of the bust’s head). The bumps and divots in the sculpture are represented in the original piece. Steelyards were used to weigh commodities in the ancient marketplace. This piece is far more beautiful and detailed than many other examples that survived antiquity. See less
