A traditional life-size sculpture of Augustus of Prima Porta, Julius Caesar's grand-nephew and adopted son. He became the first Roman Emperor following Julius Caesar's assassination and the end of the Roman Republic.
The statue is made of a fine mix of marbles and standing gracefully on a squared marble base. Augustus is depicted in military attire, symbolizing his role as commander-in-chief of the Roman army. The sculpture is made by Andrea Navari, who was born in 1838 and died in 1897.
As for the cupid with the dolphin, this detail is part of the original sculpture and symbolizes Augustus's divine lineage and connection to the goddess Venus. The dolphin was a common symbol associated with Venus, and the cupid riding the dolphin signifies the divine ancestry of the Julian family, from which Augustus descended. This symbolism emphasizes Augustus's claim to divine favor and his role as a bringer of peace and prosperity to Rome.
