Philips Wouwerman was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for his genre paintings of peasants and hunting scenes. Born on May 24, 1619 in Haarlem, the Netherlands, he began his career by imitating child painters such as Pieter van Laer. His equine paintings earned him a place among the most important and prosperous Dutch painters of the 17th century. The artist died on May 19, 1668 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. In 2009, Wouwerman was the subject of a retrospective that traveled from the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel to the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Today his works can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the National Gallery in London and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. See less
