George Scarth French was an artist based in Whitby, Yorkshire, who is known to have exhibited between 1894 and 1910. However, he continued to paint well beyond these dates.
His works are quite scarce now, mostly coastal scenes, and rarely feature subjects outside of his beloved West Riding of Yorkshire.
This original watercolour of Whitby harbour, the mouth of the River Esk, shows the famous 199 steps, stone jetty and a cluster of red roofed cottages and town houses. Perched high on the cliff, along the skyline we see the remains of Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic tale of Dracula. In the foreground a small fishing vessel, with red tinged sail, has just set out into the North Sea, watched by a handful of pedestrians on the shore and half a dozen seagulls who circle the harbour. The painting conveys an uplifting mood, where quiet activity creates just enough capture in an otherwise tranquil scene.
