Nancy Delouis, born in 1941, is a French Postwar artist renowned for her vibrant use of color and form. Her Post-Impressionism style of her paintings, characterized by the liberating power of these elements, often depict interior scenes and still lifes that blend the exotic with the exquisite. Delouis's works are rich in interwoven patterns and textures, frequently incised into the surface with the point of her brush. Infused with light and saturated colors, her style is distinctly French, drawing on the aesthetic traditions of artists like Bonnard, Vuillard, Renoir, Matisse, and Gauguin (self-claimed as being very important influences for her).
Delouis's paintings often convey a genuine sense of reserve beneath their vivid surfaces. Her subjects, primarily women, are portrayed reading, reflecting, working, or bathing, alone or in groups, always exuding an air of calm self-possession. This sense of independence suggests that these women would continue their activities even without an audience. This distancing effect is also present in her depictions of more social settings, such as West African marketplaces or Japonisme interiors, where figures and objects are given almost equal emphasis, engaging in a lively interplay of color, form, and pattern.
Delouis hails from an artistic family—her maternal great-grandfather was Auguste Rodin’s first cousin—but perhaps the greatest impact on her work has come from Limoges, where she was born and still lives and works. The city’s remarkable decorative legacy and the surrounding Limousin countryside shape her technique and style. Delouis is widely exhibited and collected internationally from Messum's in London to galleries in the USA, UK, Canada and Russia.
