This clean-lined stone basin was hand-carved with a tapered form by artisans in China's Shandong province. Though it looks like a meticulous painting, the mesmerizing pattern of the puddingstone is actually inherent to the stone, a conglomerate material quarried in the Liaoning region of China and prized by scholars for its exceptional patterning. Puddingstone was the preferred material for traditional calligraphy tables, not only for its appearance but also for the density of the surface it offers for painting.
