Meditating on the stone’s irregular composition, the Qing-dynasty scholar sought inspiration in the sculptural form and unpredictable patterning of a well-chosen stone. Dahua stones are dredged from the depths of the Red River in China's Guangxi province, where a silt-laden current naturally polishes each stone and deposits layers of strata over time.
