Carleton Wiggins (American 1848 - 1932) "Sheep on a Hillside" Old Lyme, Connecticut tonalist impressionist landscape oil painting on a mahogany board, late 19th century. Original gilt frame. A related painting similar in tone and scene is in the collections of the Florence Griswold Museum.
Measures 24 3/4" x 21" x 3" framed.
One of the early artists in Old Lyme and father of artist Guy Wiggins. Carleton Wiggins studied at the National Academy with George Inness, and also in Paris. He was a member of the National Academy, the Lotos Club, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, the Lyme Art Association and president of the Salmagundi Club. Best known for bucolic landscapes and Old Lyme, he also painted in East Hampton, Long Island.
