Callahan was a student at Boston’s School … Read more Modernist abstract painting circa 1960s by Worcester, Mass, born artist Phillip Callahan, (1918-1991). Callahan was a student at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the esteemed Ecole Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In the mid-1950s, he studied at the New York Art Students League under Vaclav Vytlacil, a disciple of Hans Hoffman who also taught Louise Bourgeois, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly. Callahan also participated in an important group exhibition at the New York Contemporary Arts Gallery (known for launching the career of Mark Rothko) and had work included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
