"Letters of Madame de Sévigné" is a collection of letters that brings together a vast correspondence written by the Marquise de Sévigné in the 17th century. Addressed mainly to her daughter, Madame de Grignan, these letters offer a fascinating insight into the life of the nobility during the reign of Louis XIV. They cover a wide range of subjects: maternal love, politics, society and the events of the time, such as war or court intrigues. Her style, both natural and refined, is marked by vivacity, humor and penetrating observations, which has contributed to making this correspondence a masterpiece of French literature.
Madame de Sévigné, born Marie de Rabutin-Chantal in 1626, is one of the most emblematic figures of classical French literature. Married young and then quickly widowed, she devoted a large part of her life to the education of her children and to writing letters, an art in which she excelled. Her letters, initially private, became after her death a precious testimony to her time, both for their content and their literary style. Admired for her brilliant mind and her lucid view of the society of her time, she became a reference in the epistolary genre. Through her writings, she was able to capture the liveliness of everyday life, while depicting the subtle nuances of human relationships and the social issues of the time.
