Working in the ateliers of Antoine Bourdelle, Constantin Brancusi, and Henri Laurens. After returning to Rome he became a leading abstractionist. In the 1950's he co-founded the group Origine which maintained a studio, gallery, and publication.. His sculptures recognized as the definitive expression of the Italian abstraction movement..

This sculpted bust entitled "Bearded Man" was created by Ettore Colla in 1966. And reflects a shift from abstraction to more figural work at the end of his long career. Carved ceramic with an applied finish in green, brown, and rust tones. Mounted on a patinated metal pole inserted into a heavy painted faux wood base. Inscribed with the signature "E. Colla" on lower back. See photo for details. This piece comes with no record of provenance. However research found records of the same piece being sold in 2013 and 2018 prior to our recent purchase.

Fully assembled measures 20" high x 5.75" wide x 6.5" deep.
The bust alone measures 19.5" high x 5.75" wide x 6.5" deep.
The base alone measures 6" high x 6" wide x 6" deep.

In very good vintage condition with no cracks, major chips, finish loss, or structural issues of note. Some very minor "dings" and paint loss commensurate with age/use. Bottom has a worn green felt surface. See photos for details. See less
