About the artist :
Leon Pacunayen, born in 1935, is a renowned Filipino artist, known primarily for his mastery of watercolor painting. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1957. His career began in the Philippines, where he exhibited at the Philippine Art Gallery (PAG) and won numerous awards, including the First Prize at the AAP annual art competition in 1959. His art focuses on landscapes, particularly using the wet technique to depict mountains and clouds with an emphasis on mass and space.

In the 1960s, Pacunayen relocated to Italy to continue his artistic studies at the Regge Accademia di Belli Arti in Rome. Over his career, he has held solo exhibitions in both the Philippines and Italy, and his works have been showcased in prestigious galleries such as the Luz Gallery and the Museum of Philippine Art. He also received several international awards in Italy, including gold medals from the Premio Montecompatr and the Premio Republica di San Marino.

Pacunayen’s works often feature somber, earthy tones, especially in his watercolors of rural and urban landscapes. A monograph of his works, An Artist Returns, was written by art critic Emmanuel Torres, further cementing his legacy in both Filipino and international art circles​(
