Made with handwoven wool in France circa 1960-1970, this 3x6 vintage tapestry is a rare and exciting new addition to Rug & Kilim's collection—a signed piece by Belgian artist Edmon Dubrunfaut from his mid-century works in Aubusson.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will appreciate this exquisite Dubrunfaut tapestry as a masterful example of mid-20th century modernist textile art. Titled "Les faisans" (The Pheasants), this wool tapestry is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, showcasing Dubrunfaut's signature style that marries modernist sensibilities with traditional craftsmanship. Against a backdrop of deep, mysterious black, the composition unfolds like a nocturnal reverie. The tapestry portrays three pheasants, their plumage rendered in a rich palette of warm browns, golds, and reds. Each bird is a masterpiece of stylized realism, their forms at once recognizable and reimagined through Dubrunfaut's artistic lens. Interspersed among the pheasants are striking, elongated leaves in sage green, their forms punctuated by delicate white dots.
The lower portion of the tapestry transitions to a subdued gray and is adorned with an abstract scattering of small dark marks, evoking the texture of soil or the dappled shadows of a forest floor. Dubrunfaut's signature can be discerned in the lower left corner, while the date of creation, '68, is subtly incorporated into the design on the right, affirming this piece as a significant work from the artist's mature period. Connoisseurs may admire that its acquisition represents an opportunity to own a piece of art history - a work that blends modernist aesthetics with the timeless craft of French tapestry weaving.
