Elegant Pair of Antique Gien Faience Oil Lamps Converted to Table Lamps – Circa 1880
This exquisite pair of antique oil lamps, originally crafted in Gien, France, around 1880, has been skillfully converted into table lamps while preserving their historic charm. Resting on round brass bases, these “lampes à pétrole” feature hand-painted Gien Renaissance-style décor, adorned with intricate floral garlands and mythological figures, characteristic of the celebrated faience tradition. The lamps retain their original pierced brass oil burners, enhancing their authenticity and decorative appeal.
The Faïencerie de Gien, founded in 1821 by Thomas Edme Hulm, became one of the most prestigious faience manufacturers of the 19th century, rivaling renowned French producers such as Creil-Montereau, Longwy, Sarreguemines, and Bordeaux. Initially focused on crockery, the factory expanded its production to elaborate dinner services, heraldic pieces, and decorative faience, with oil lamps emerging as a hallmark of its craftsmanship.
