This piece's aesthetic was heavily influenced by Pablo Picasso, whom DeSimone greatly admired. It is an amalgam of Italian folk art (simplicity, inaccuracy and crudeness of subject) with modernism in the use of color and shape. Giovanni DeSimone was a mid-century ceramicist whose lively designs seem primed to elicit smiles. He created colorful vessels, platters and wall art, decorated with festive figures, flowers and fauna. DeSimone was born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1930. See less
