A very impressive, rare and strikingly attractive mid century chest of drawers in lovely vintage condition. Made by acclaimed cabinet makers elliotts of newbury in england in 1969, this spectacular highboy or tallboy chest of drawers will add superb quality, gorgeous rich colouring and a fabulously chic mid century aesthetic to any interior.
impressively sized, this stunning chest features four very large and deep drawers, one ‘hidden’ upper frieze drawer for watches, wallet, cufflinks, jewellery etc, and has the original “24 apr 1969” stamp proudly displayed on the back. The drawers are made of solid teak and the whole piece is finished in beautiful and richly hued, two-tone sapele or ‘pinstripe’ mahogany veneer, which was used by high-end furniture makers in the late-1960s to distinguish pieces as rather special.
in terms of design, you can see in this lovely chest the significant influence that both the scandinavian modern and brutalist design movements were having on british design by the late-1960s: the minimalist, outer cuboid shape is wonderfully softened by the ‘ordered flow’ of the inner lines and curves, which beautifully catch the light.
detailed craftsmanship abounds in this piece, from the superb widthways-running handle mounts with horizontal grain to the rounded upper ‘hidden’ drawer that matches the lower front area, to the excellence of the dovetail-jointed teak lined drawers and the way the whole base is lifted on hidden feet for longevity and ease of moving – this truly is an understated mid century stunner!
condition
this is in good-to-very-good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, it was expertly crafted and has been well loved. It has only minor imperfections to show its age and use, including minor marks and blemishes, which are well hidden by the pinstripe pattern of the sapele mahogany veneer. Overall this is an incredible piece in lovely vintage condition and if well looked after it should be just as breath-taking for generations to come – please see the photos.
