This is a stunning Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. His works display elements of Dali, Miro, Sam Francis, etc and at times his work is nothing short of genius. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.
This piece is exploding with color and style. The painting technique is unique for Grise - combining fingers, brushes, and possibly rags or other similar material - to create a spectacularly textured and personal work. He also used a combination of high-gloss paint and mat to give it added dimension. This is a very special Grise work. Done in the mid-1960s, it is a great example of the time period. It is the type of art that you just can't stop staring at. It is signed in the lower right and is UNFRAMED. Please see our other listings for more by this extremely talented artist. .
