Cache Pot / Orchies slip pot, 19th century. XX – France
Extraordinary cache pot made of French slip, in the 20th century. Orchies manufacturing, belonging to Nord-Pas de Calais, one of the northernmost regions of the country. It has a simple structure, it is a kind of wide-mouth pot that better facilitates its functionality. What draws powerful attention are the decorations and the technique used to achieve them. The top displays raised pink and mauve floral patterns, typical of the influence of French decorative art, often associated with styles such as Art Nouveau or even older designs. These floral cartouches are interspersed with sky blue triglyphs. These vibrant colors contrast with the more sober brown tones on the base, characteristic of French ceramics of this style.
As for the technique, slip is a decoration process that consists of painting with white or colored pastes that are then covered with a ceramic or glazed varnish; This allows for relief and color effects. In the lower area, stamp with Moulin-des-Loups mill and “Orchies”.
About the manufacture of Orchies
Emile L'Herminé Declercq, who already owned a faience factory in Rimbaud (Belgium) in the 1870s, wishing to increase his production, settled with his brother Joseph in Orchies in 1886. Orchies, former stronghold of the counts of Flanders is located near the Belgian border and not far from Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, famous center of faience production since the 18th century, with the "Moulin" faience factory of the Wolves. In 1904, he directed his production towards artistic earthenware under the name "L'Herminé et Cie". Thus we find the brand OLD or Orchies L'Herminé Declercq. In the 1920s, the Orchies earthenware factory merged with the Hamage earthenware factory and became Le “Moulin des Loups & Hamages”. The brand is usually decorated with the windmill and the capital letter ORCHIES. In the 1910s, the earthenware factory employed about 175 people, while the town of Orchies had about 5,000 inhabitants. The workforce will gradually increase until reaching more than 500 people in the years 1950 to 1970. The workshops produce until 1980, the date of their definitive closure.
