The hinged box made is from solid figured rosewood and finely and is sumptuously inlaid with bone, ebony and exotic woods on all sides, portraying a Maharaja & Maharani, each panel depicts the couple in a landscape scene with Taj Mahal style buildings. The borders and the base of the box are inlaid with elliptical and floral bone inlaid devices, the box having a locking brass hasp to receive a small padlock, the interior having a blue velvet interior, the box is raised on circular bun feet.
Condition is excellent.
There was a great tradition of producing very high quality inlaid boxes and smaller pieces of furniture in Hoshiarpur, a town in the Punjab region, where this rather beautiful box comes from.
