Silver Gelatine Print by Erich Andres, 1941. This photograph, taken in 1938 on Amrum, shows a lighthouse keeper standing on the observation deck of the lighthouse. He is wearing a uniform and cap, typical of the era, and is looking out over the coastal landscape through a pair of binoculars. The view behind him stretches out to a vast, sandy landscape with dunes and possibly the sea in the distance, suggesting the island's location in the North Sea. The lighthouse's metal railing is visible, curving around the platform where the keeper is standing. His posture, intently observing the horizon, suggests vigilance, perhaps as he watches for ships or weather changes. The black-and-white tones of the photograph lend a historic feel, capturing the important role of lighthouse keepers during this time in guiding ships safely through the coastal waters. Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
