Lopatkin was a member of the Union of artists of the USSR. He graduated from the Moscow art Institute. During his studies, Lopatkin repeatedly traveled to different parts of the country (Karelia, the Baltic States, Arctic, Baikal, Central Asia, Crimea), where he participated in student exhibitions.

As a member of the Union of artists, Lopatkin participated 12 times in the all-Russian and all-Union exhibitions. He also was a participant of all-Union and international exhibitions since 1957. He won multiple prizes for his art. Today, Lopatkin's works can be seen in museums in Russia as well as private collections across the globe.
