the ph 5 features three lower shades of different sizes, mathematically proportioned to ensure an even distribution of light, complemented by a blue disc diffuser and an inner red shade that reflects a warm, reddish tone. The upper funnel-shaped shade and large bulb housing are finished with a perforated orange hanging plate.
this version presents a blue exterior with red interior highlights and a blue disc diffuser — one of the classic colour combinations offered by louis poulsen.

originally designed by poul henningsen in 1958, the ph 5 remains one of the most iconic pendant lamps in danish design history. Created for louis poulsen, it embodies henningsen’s lifelong pursuit of glare-free, harmonious lighting.

henningsen designed the ph 5 in response to what he described as the “unpleasant incandescent light bulb.” his solution was a closed, multi-shade system that completely conceals the light source. The layered structure filters light through reddish-orange and bluish tones, transforming the harsh bulb glare into a warm, soothing evening glow.

the name “ph 5” -'ph' refers poul henningsen and '5' to the 50 cm diameter of the upper shade. The lamp’s precisely engineered system of four reflecting shades and a coloured interior shade creates both soft downward illumination and a gentle sideways glow, making it ideal for dining areas and intimate interiors.

this later version includes the semi-transparent frosted base plate, which increases brightness while maintaining the ph 5’s signature glare-free lighting quality.
