Set in the original carved giltwood frame, this antique oil on canvas was painted in France, circa 1849, the art … Read more Set in the original carved giltwood frame, this antique oil on canvas was painted in France, circa 1849, the art work depicts two French soldiers in hard discussion with a man carrying the tricolor flag. The man is pointing out the national motto of the Republic of France: "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite". The painting is signed and dated 1849 in the lower right corner but the signature is unreadable. The piece is in excellent condition and
stamped on the back of the painting. (See last picture)
"Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité", French for "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity", is the national motto of France adopted at the time of the French Revolution. When the Constitution of 1848 was drafted, the motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" was defined as a "principle" of the French Republic. Although it finds its origins in the French Revolution, it was then only one motto among others and was not institutionalized until the Third Republic at the end of the 19th century. Debates concerning the compatibility and order of the three terms began at the same time as the Revolution.
