Crafted in Belgium circa 1890 by the Nimy-Lès-Mons Faïencerie, the sculptural majolica jug depicts the smiling figure gripping the waistband of his trousers with both hands.

The sailor’s clothing, expressive face, and integrated handle are hand-painted in warm shades of brown, cream, and ochre, with darker accents emphasizing the deeply modeled folds and facial details. The interior retains the traditional soft pink glaze often seen on European barbotine wares of the period. Similar in spirit to the whimsical character pitchers produced by the French Onnaing factory, this Belgian example has its own distinctive modeling and personality. The underside bears the impressed manufacturer’s mark, further identifying its origin.

The Nimy-Lès-Mons pottery was established in Belgium in 1789 by Dieudonné-Joseph Antoine and became known for its decorative faience and imaginative figural ceramics. The same sailor pitcher is illustrated on page 122 of Maryse Bottero’s reference book Pichets en Barbotine.

Perfect for a kitchen, dining room, or wet bar, the pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining vivid colors and crisp sculptural detail.
