Crafted in France circa 1920, the patinated terracotta figure depicts a seated fox terrier resting on its hindquarters with one front paw raised, its head turned slightly forward in an attentive pose.

The finely modeled sculpture features realistic anatomical details, expressive eyes, folded ears, and a decorative collar with buckle around the neck. The dog's muscular body and textured coat are beautifully rendered, showcasing the artist's skill in animalier sculpture. The figure rests on a naturalistic rocky base and retains a rich bronze-tone patinated finish. The base is signed "Th. Cartier" and bears a small brass plaque inscribed "Fox Terrier par Th. Cartier, Médaille d'Or 1927."

Thomas François Cartier (1879–1943) was a distinguished French animalier sculptor who studied under renowned sculptor Georges Gardet. Best known for his realistic depictions of hunting dogs, lions, and other wild animals, Cartier began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1904 and received a gold medal in 1927.

The antique canine sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a beautiful aged patina. An appealing decorative piece for a library, study, or collection of French animalier art.
