The triptych drawing is signed and dated 1981 by Gordon Henderson and includes the signature of Barbara Abrams, a teacher at Parsons and his advisor. It is presumed this drawing was a final project for graduation. We are not sure if the other drawings date from Gordon Henderson's time at Parson, or a later date.

The triptych drawing has verso tape binding the panels together and measures 15 x 33 inches overall. The two drawings in brown and red tones, with one bearing a sample material swatch, measure 14 x 11 inches. Two others, one possible part of a larger sheet measure, 15 x 11 inches. These are all executed on heavy paper. There are five sheets with multiple drawings: these measure 13-3/4 x 18-3/4 inches and are executed on thinner paper.

All drawings show some signs of handling wear, which is understandable given their working nature. They are displayed on a black background to delineate the edges. Ex Phyllis Lucas Gallery collection.

Gordon Henderson is one of the most influential African American designers of all time. After graduating from Parson’s School of Design in 1981, he landed a job as an assistant at Calvin Klein, and it was at Calvin Klein that Henderson would develop the simple, clean aesthetic that would win him a Perry Ellis Award for best new designer in 1989. Henderson eventually launched his own label, which became known for its elegant and sophisticated designs characterized by their clean lines, classic shapes, and attention to detail. He was particularly skilled at tailoring and creating suits and coats that were both stylish and practical. These drawings showcase his talent.

His designs were favored by many high-profile clients, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Nancy Reagan, and Princess Grace of Monaco. He also gained notice as the designer of the blue suit worn by John F. Kennedy Jr. during his wedding to Carolyn Bessette, a former Calvin Klein publicist and a friend of Henderson's. Henderson has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the fashion industry. He was a member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America and was recognized by the Fashion Group International for his innovative designs. He is the first designer to gain financial backing from a large retailer (Saks Fifth Avenue). His legacy continues to influence contemporary fashion designers. See less
