* Hans Ott is considered one of the most important representatives of European woodcuts. Ott was born in Bad Berneck in the Fichtelgebirge, where his parents ran an inn. After his training as a forester, he experienced first-hand the plight of forest workers in the post-war period at the Tegernsee Forestry Office. He gave up his job, wandered penniless on foot and without a fixed plan through the Black Forest, through Tyrol, over the Brenner Pass to Lake Garda. In South Tyrol he also met two artists who greatly impressed him and introduced him to the technique of colored woodcuts. from 1931 onwards, Ott deepened his talent by studying at the art academy in Munich. Three years later he returned to his Franconian homeland and worked on a new technique in Bayreuth: zincography. As a war painter, Ott experienced the Russian campaign up to the inferno of Stalingrad. Portraits and light-filled watercolors have been preserved from this period. His last creative period began in 1961 with the branch in Ebermannstadt.
