Hand-knotted in wool and originating from India circa 1920-1930, this 8×10 antique Agra rug is a rare and collectible jail rug, among the most exciting new additions to the Rug & Kilim Collection.
On the Design
A warm play of gold, red and blue tones underscores the field, while the widest border of three lends an additional cream tone to the piece. The all over pattern is a play of florals and a double-sided mihrab arch, unfolding from the central medallion in a pleasing fashion. Admirers of the craft will appreciate the thoughtful sense of movement of in the marriage of color and pattern here—a subtle, skillful detail connoting the work of a deft hand in its period.
Condition:
This antique Agra Jail rug further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage. Buyers will note that this rug was reduced in size by its previous steward.
