Vintage Bamana mask from the 1950s.
This is a mask used during cultural dances- one of the most popular dances is that of the Ntomo association, which functioned as a bush school for the young. These dances were performed at harvest festivals.
The number of horns indicated the sex of the mask (male: 3 or 6 horns, female: 4 or 8 horns, androgynous: 2,5 or 7 horns).
