Oskar kokoschka, with whom he studied at the international academy in salzburg, austria, also had a decisive influence on his figurative representations.

in 1946, at the age of 21, thauer exhibited together with gabriele münter and others from the kandinsky circle in murnau. Gabriele münter spoke of thauer as having a genius talent.

f. K. Thauer's group exhibitions were in switzerland, where he had great success in the “am pfauen” gallery in zurich. His successes led to him being named cavaliere stella al merito artistico.
