The Boston Saturday Afternoon.
The year is 1983. You are on Boylston Street, the wind off the Charles is brisk, and you’ve just stepped into Shreve, Crump & Low. The air inside smells of silver polish and old money.
You aren’t looking for just any vessel. You are looking for these.
Wedgwood. Specifically, Jasperware. That unmistakable, matte "lavender blue" that seems to have been plucked directly from a late-August sky just before dusk.
The Pedigree
These are not your average cupboard-fillers. This is a set of eight demitasse cups and saucers, each featuring those crisp, Neoclassical bas-reliefs in white—muscular yet delicate, like frozen poetry.
They carry a certain weight, a certain gravity. Perhaps because they were personally signed by Lord Wedgwood himself during that 1983 visit. It’s the ceramic equivalent of having a first edition inscribed by the author.
The Origin: Purchased from Boston’s preeminent jewelers.
The Condition: Impeccable. They’ve spent forty years in a state of suspended animation.
The Mystery: We suspect they were a wedding gift. One of those "too nice to use" items that gets relegated to the dark recesses of a mahogany sideboard.
A Call to Action (and Caffeine)
What a tragedy, really. A wedding present that never saw a wedding toast.
Objects possess no soul unless we give them one. If you keep them hidden, they are merely inventory. They are "taking up space." But, if you fill them with a dark, potent espresso on a Tuesday morning?
Then they become a memory. They become yours.
Use the good china. Drink the good wine. Life is too short for chipped mugs and "saving it for later."
