This exquisite pair of two-armed wall lights exemplifies the elegance of Viennese Modernism from the 1940s, designed by architect Hugo Gorge in the 1930s. Crafted with remarkable quality, their sculptural form features gracefully curved brass arms and lovely conical lampshades. The sconces are in very good condition, with the brass hardware displaying a marginal patina that has only grown more beautiful over time. The off-white beige silk lampshades are original and still in good condition. Upon request, we offer complimentary rewiring of the lights to meet the standards of your country. Hugo Gorge (1883-1934) was part of a circle of architects and designers alongside Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad. Gorge's educational journey began at the lower secondary school in Troppau, where he studied from 1893 to 1897, followed by the State Industrial School in Brno until 1901. Between 1906 and 1908, he audited courses at the Vienna University of Technology and pursued studies under Friedrich Ohmann at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1907 to 1910. Joining Ohmann's studio as a collaborator in 1909, Gorge later served as an assistant to Oskar Strnad at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1911 to 1912. He obtained authorization as a civil architect in 1933. Gorge's portfolio included designing interiors and constructing numerous residential and commercial buildings in Vienna. In 1932, he contributed to the Werkbundsiedlung in Vienna with a double residential house. His design ethos favored simple ornamentation, positioning him as an early advocate of modernism in Vienna alongside Adolf Loos and Josef Frank.
