1930s Still Life Flower Painting by Artist M. M. Neunsinger
This still life by M. M. Neunsinger (1908 - 2004) presents a vase of flowers in rich, earthy tones, with vibrant orange and yellow blooms contrasted by dark purple irises. The painting, in a post-impressionist style, uses loose brushstrokes and soft blending to create a moody, atmospheric scene. The background is abstract, with shadowy objects, while the central bouquet remains the focus. The composition exudes a quiet sense of reflection, capturing the fleeting beauty of the flowers with a natural, unpolished realism.
About Maria Neunsinger
Maria Neunsinger (1908 - 2004), a graduate of the Maryland Institute (now Maryland Institute College of Art, MICA), was a practicing artist who made significant contributions to the art program at the Maryland State Normal School (MSNS), now Towson University. Known for her still-life and landscape paintings, Neunsinger’s work reflected her mastery of composition, color, and a keen observation of the evolving industrial and technological landscape of the early 20th century.
In addition to her teaching career at MSNS, Neunsinger was recognized as an artist in the broader Maryland art community. She was featured in the Baltimore Museum of Art’s Online Archive of Maryland Regional Artist Exhibitions, participating in the First Annual Exhibition of Maryland Painters, Sculptors, and Print Makers (April 3 – May 15, 1933), and again in the Second Annual Exhibition (April 3 – May 6, 1934). These prestigious exhibitions highlighted Neunsinger’s standing as a respected regional artist during this period.
After her tenure at MSNS, Neunsinger was hired by Baltimore County to oversee the construction of new county buildings, where she continued to paint and document the industrial advances around her. Her work at MSNS laid the groundwork for a program that emphasized the practical application of art, blending manual skills with aesthetic education, a legacy that endured well beyond her time.
Condition:
The condition of the painting is great condition for its antique/vintage age. There are some areas of loss of paint but it seems to be intentional by the artist, meant to be covered by a frame.
The frame is not recommended as a forever frame as it doesn't fit very well in it, notice the spacing between the board and the wood board on the top right corner. We are happy to remove the old wooden frame and ship painting without the frame. Please send us a message for any additional questions.
