Hamilton was born in … Read more C. 1850 James Hamilton(Philadelphia 1819-1878) oil on canvas. One of America’s first and foremost marine artist. Hamilton was born in Ireland. and moved to Philadelphia in 1834 where he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and as a drawing instructor he taught Thomas Moran. This painting is in his scarcer earlier more realistic and less dramatic style, likely a scene along the New Jersey coast. The famous author Charles Dickens was his friend and client. Hamilton was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. Numerous museums and institutions house his work such as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, the Pennsylvania Historical Society, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A book by Arlene Jacobowitz of an exhibition of his paintings at the Brooklyn Museum in 1966 is free to the purchaser of the painting. The painting is in excellent professionally restored condition, signed in the lower left, and in a fine gilded contemporary frame. It measures 12” x 19.5”unframed and 19” x 27”framed. See less
