A portrait depicting a group sampling wine. "Weinprobe" (Wine Tasting). Looking closely at the wine label on the bottle as well as the writing on the barrel to the left, maybe a winery in Johannisberg, perhaps Schloss Johannisberg. Excellent emphasis to detail by the skilled hand of the artist, beautifully rendered portraits of the gentleman as they raise their glasses in a toast, note the details to the glint on their gold jewelry, the play of light on the crystal wine glasses and golden hues of their riesling wine. Interestingly, there are five sitters but six glasses of wine. Perhaps one is the artist's, or perhaps for you the viewer as an invitation to their table, or perhaps for a missing friend who is unseen. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left corner. R. Dörr 1897. Unframed. Measures 24" x 18 5/8" x 7/8" deep. In overall good antique condition with general wear around the periphery, hidden once framed, appears to be a scuff or two in the paint at the upper right of the stairwell. Verso on the stretcher is a label “Kunsthaus Schöninger” for the gallery Kunsthandel Schöninger in Munich, Germany. Started in 1920 by Heinrich Schöninger, a renowned art dealer and collector who specialized in Old Master paintings and sculptures. He opened the museum/gallery to showcase his extensive collection and to provide a space for art enthusiasts to view and purchase works of art. See less
