Signed in the … Read more Fine and early oil on canvas by British artist William Walker Morris(1821-1896) of a terrier and rabbits. Signed in the lower left and on the upper left side, and dated 1854. The painting was acquired from a California estate whose owner had the painting for more than 65 years. Morris painted mainly animals and landscapes such as the large work "The Days Bag" that sold for over $28,000. at Christie's in London in 2007. Morris was born in the Surrey area, attended the Royal Academy in London, and during this time became acquainted with the noted animalier artist Thomas Sidney Cooper. Although Morris held his first exhibition in 1844, his work flourished throughout British art circles And exhibitions from the 1850-1871 time frame. One of his most famous paintings is at the National Trust in Cambridge, England entitled "A Milk Stall in St. James Park". He lived in France from 1865-1868 where he became a member of the Societe des artistes Francaise. The painting is in excellent condition and needs only to be hung on a wall and enjoyed. It was lined 50 to 75 years ago and is in an older, gilted frame. It measures 15" x 22"unframed and 21.5" x 28.5"framed. See less
