Tonalist oil on canvas by J. Francis Murphy (American-Murphy was called by his peers “the American Corot” for his poetic landscapes and marshy terrain. He was born in Oswego, New York. While living in Chicago he studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago, but was essentially self taught.
