A Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) for Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory of Sweden wall pocket vase from the Art Deco period produced during the second quarter of the 20th century. The lobed vessel fans outward in steps and is decorated in a striking mottled green glaze with a hint of iridescence and hand-painted satin gold accents. There are two holes on the reverse to enable display as wall decor.
Very good condition with small spots of gilt wear, measuring 6 in. height x 5 in. width x 2.38 in. depth. Fully marked on the reverse: Gustavsberg / [anchor] / JE (Ekberg's artist cipher) marks under hand-painted N-153 / y.
Josef Ekberg was a Swedish artist, designer, and ceramicist who became the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1908, succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg is best known for his development of a hand-carved Sgraffito technique and lustered objects characterized by geometric shapes in bold colors with golden accents
