This work features the portrait of a partially nude man portrayed from his profile and introspectively seating within an interior setting. The piece is unsigned and inscribed to the verso with artist’s name and date. This composition is presented unframed.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913-1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
