This intricate work features … Read more We are featuring an early 19th century Russian orthodox icon silver plate oklad on wood panel. This intricate work features The Virgin of Hodegetria embracing the Christ child who holds a bible with his left hand and subtly grabs the virgins robes with his right. The figures are accompanied by the saints John and Andrew to the sides and nine saints and martyrs aligned along the lower margin. The work is comprised of a high relief repousse embellished with intricate delineations and detailing. This piece features three Continental European silver plate marks to the lower left of the Virgin. Additionally, a series of incised inscriptions in Latin and Cyrillic are present throughout the composition. See less
