This imposing, sculptural clay vessel captivates with its striking archaic design, which is strongly inspired by the ritual bronze wine vessels (He or You type) of the ancient Chinese Zhou and Shang dynasties. This collector’s item, crafted in the 20th century, is made of fine, unglazed reddish-brown clay (in the style of traditional Yixing Zisha pottery).
The bulbous body is adorned with a deeply relief-carved, circumferential meander pattern—the classic Chinese Leiwen (thunder pattern). The recesses are artfully accented with a whitish hue to lend the relief additional depth and mimic the aesthetic of a centuries-old patina.
A particular eye-catcher is the artfully stylized spout in the shape of a phoenix or bird’s head, as well as the rigid, curved loop handle, which terminates in sculpted dragon or animal heads (Taotie). The vessel stands sturdily on three organically shaped legs and features a perfectly fitting, removable lid.
With its matte, earthy texture and bold silhouette, this piece fits perfectly into modern interior styles such as Wabi-Sabi, Japandi, or the eclectic mid-century look.
