The … Read more 1930s French Impressionist Barbizon School oil on panel view of children playing in a forest by Georges Guerin (1910-1984). The painting is signed bottom right and also signed top left to the back of the board. The painting is also titled and dated to the back of the board, 'Mont-de-l'Enclus, 20 Juillet 1935' and initialed.

A very charming view of a group of children playing in a wooded glade. Guerin has achieved a wonderful play between light and shade, the monumentality of the trees against the diminutive figures of the children in their brightly coloured costumes. Guerin's handling of the poplar trees is clearly influenced by the paintings by Monet of the same subject.

Guerin is noted for his landscapes as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast.

The Mont de l'Enclus (in Dutch Kluisberg) is a mountain in the Flemish Ardennes, located on the border between the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region, between the municipalities of Kluisbergen and Mont-de-l'Enclus. See less
