A small graphic made in the longitudinal woodcut technique in the art deco style. Dated to the 1930s. The graphic belongs to a series dealing with the subject of work at the harvest and the field.
The presented graphic shows a shepherd dressed in a typical coat, hat and with a shepherd's cane in his hand, against the background of a landscape. The landscape occupies a small part of the picture field, but it reflects the rural character of the area. The low horizon (reaching me about ¼ of the height) shows fields with grazing sheep. A great cloud billows above it, which at the same time is the background for the figure of the shepherd.
The technique used by the artist perfectly harmonizes with the art deco style. Longitudinal woodcut is one of the first graphic techniques used in Europe since the 14th century. The board on which the engraving is made is cut along the trunk, which allows for a limited range of thickness and line density.
The Art Deco style was characterized by simplification and geometrization of forms, as well as the frequent use of sharply cut, expressive lines. This type of styling is visible in the presented graphics.
