A pair of antique Luneville porcelain wall pockets. These pieces are a much loved design of a cone shaped "May Basket" shape with adornments or "ribbons" and floral designs. The center portions are decorated with meaningful icons. They each measure 12" tall x 10" wide x 4.5” deep. The blue/pink vase is in good antique condition. There are stains on inside, but no chips or cracks. The pink/green vase has been repaired and visibly from the front does not show. It is also stamped Luneville on bottom backside. Located in the Lorraine region of France, Luneville with production dating back to the 1700's. Luneville used floral designs, along with animals and picturesque rural scenes. The use of a palette of beautiful color combinations is an earmark of Luneville. Early Luneville faience was painted in underglaze colors of polychrome or blue monochrome (camaieu). French faience is a form of Majolica and uses a softer from of ceramic. Therefore it is very easy to become cracked or chipped. That any examples exist is uncanny. Around 1755, pieces were made from terre-de-Lorraine, a soft white earthenware that had a resemblance of biscuit or underglazed porcelain. They also produced a line called Faience Fine. The porcelain wall pocket did not make an appearance until the 1700's (18th Century). Before that wall pockets were made from wood or cloth. See less
